series editor, Gibbs smith education, 2021–present
It has been a lifelong dream of mine to work for a periodical. I have loved writing since I was a child; I crafted many “pretend” magazines and newspapers in my youth. After working several years as a freelance writer, I was privileged to be chosen as the series editor of The Issue, a new social studies magazine for Gibbs Smith Education, along with our diversity studies series, including the books Movement (Black Studies) and Voices (Ethnic Studies). In this role, I am the editor and project manager for each publication. My responsibilities are many:
Planning and presenting a storyboard for each issue/book
Writing articles and hiring freelance writers for various pieces
Collaborating with the editorial, curriculum, and design teams
Aligning all content with the C3 Framework, state standards, company values, and sensitivity and style guides
Ensuring each issue is inclusive and accurate
Fact-checking, editing, and approving each issue for print
