series editor, Gibbs smith education, 2021–present

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to work for a periodical. I have loved writing since I was a child; I crafted many “pretend” magazines and newspapers in my youth. After working several years as a freelance writer, I was privileged to be chosen as the series editor of The Issue, a new social studies magazine for Gibbs Smith Education, along with our diversity studies series, including the books Movement (Black Studies) and Voices (Ethnic Studies). In this role, I am the editor and project manager for each publication. My responsibilities are many:

  • Planning and presenting a storyboard for each issue/book

  • Writing articles and hiring freelance writers for various pieces

  • Collaborating with the editorial, curriculum, and design teams

  • Aligning all content with the C3 Framework, state standards, company values, and sensitivity and style guides

  • Ensuring each issue is inclusive and accurate

  • Fact-checking, editing, and approving each issue for print
